What if I told you that the history of the Church is far stranger than most of us realize?
Not strange in the sense of “fake” or “silly,” but strange in the older, deeper sense: enchanted, mysterious, filled with symbols, miracles, and wonders that stretch the imagination and point us to the truth of Christ.
That’s what Strange Church History is about.
It’s a podcast dedicated to the bizarre and wondrous stories of Christian history. Saints who walked without their heads. Giants who carried Christ across rivers. Legends of miracles, martyrs, and holy strangeness that don’t fit neatly into modern categories.
I believe part of the weakness of modern Christianity is that we’ve forgotten this strangeness. We’ve flattened the faith into something tame and manageable, stripped of its wonder. But the Church that conquered Rome, that sent missionaries to the edges of the earth, was anything but manageable. Church history is far more enchanted than we’d dare believe.
By retelling these stories, I want to remind us that Church history is not a safe story. It is a story where Christ reigns, and His truth bursts through in ways that often shock us.
Episode one is live now. It is titled The Bishop Who Walked Without a Head and tells the story of Saint Denis of Paris, who, according to tradition, was martyred and carried his own head through the streets while proclaiming Christ.
Season one is well underway in production, with new episodes releasing every Thursday.
